Afraid to Travel: You Don’t Have to Ditch Your Travel Plans When You Have IBD

Sometimes I want to curl up in a ball and head to bed when the word “travel” comes up.

Have you ever felt this way?

It’s just such a headache no matter which stage of IBD you’re in.

I remember back to my first 20 years with Crohn’s when I didn’t want to travel because I knew that no matter where we went, I’d spend more time in the bathroom than looking at the sights.  And now, even 10 years into using food, lifestyle and supplements to quiet my symptoms, I still get the occasional uugghhh feeling when it comes to travel because I know all that goes into making travel a successful experience.  But now, instead of all that dread about finding bathrooms, my dread is all about…

  • Where can I buy the food I need away from home?
  • Where do I stay that has a place for me to refrigerate and cook my food?
  • Do I have all my food packed for the trip?
  • What will I do if I get there and I forgot something or can’t get the food I need at a local grocery store?

But here’s the thing—I never want you to think you can’t commit to an IBD eating plan (like gluten free, dairy free or even grain free like the SCD) because you won’t be able to travel anymore.

Hell to the no, girlfriend!

You can still travel.

You can still live out your bucket list of dream destinations.

I’m proof positive that it can work.  I’ve done it many times over the years and I know you can too.

And best of all, you’ll be healthy, happy and bathroom free (at least as much as everyone else) while you’re away.

Sound good? Awesome, let’s start this convo—

First things first, we have to remember that all travel is different.  From the food you can bring, to what you can cook while you are away, to what you need to buy while you’re away will all depend on 2 things:

#1 Where you’re going

#2 How you get there

Traveling by car is a much simpler packing experience because if you can think it up, you can probably take it.  The only thing you’re confined to is the space in your car.

Traveling by plane is a whole other ball of wax entirely (where does that saying come from?).

WANT TO KNOW ABOUT TRAVELING BY PLANE ON A GUT HEALING EATING PLAN?

START HERE

I’m just on the heals of an amazing girls week in California (for me, that’s a trek across the U.S.) and I went by plane.  I wish I would have taken a picture of my suitcase with all the grain free baked goods I brought with me, but here’s a pic from a recent trip.  This one was on my Instagram account. I share loads of IBD natural healing tips and tricks there.

For me, the challenge with this trip was that I knew I’d be leaving my hotel after breakfast and not returning until bedtime for several days in a row.  I needed everything I’d eat from sun up to sundown in a nice neat package.

Have you ever been on a trip like this? Where it’s go, go, go with no coming back to the hotel for meals?  Over the years, I’ve learned that it can be done pretty easily.  It just takes a little advance planning.

Here’s my meals from one of those go, go, go days:

Want to be able to do this for yourself in no time flat?

You can do it! And I’m going to help you.

Click below to get my FREE AND FABULOUS checklist of all the gut healing foods and food companies I recommend for a day of go, go, go.

Plus, I’m including a list of what eating category they fall under (gluten free, dairy free, Specific Carbohydrate Diet) so you know what you’re allowed to eat safely.

And, as a special bonus just for you, I’m including the recipes to make the delish almond flour goodies shown in the pic above.

But what if you’re traveling by car?
