Comfort Food.
What feelings come to mind when you hear this phrase Comfort Food?
And of course… comfort.
Comfort food is, well in a word—comfortable. It’s like that old, but much-loved sweater. It just feels good when you put it on.
I used to be addicted to the standard American diet comfort food. French bread, my nana’s pasta, white rice, mashed potatoes with gravy, mac and cheese… I thought these foods were comforting my belly when my IBD flared. And the truth is, they did feel awfully good going down. They’re rich and gooey, creamy and delicious. But what I didn’t find out until 20 years into my struggle with Crohn’s is that all these supposed comfort foods are ENORMOUS gut disruptors, not gut comforters.
As these starchy delights digest in your achy belly, they create a sugar-filled environment. And guess what all those lovely bacterial, creepy, crawly, critters in your gut love to feed on to multiply?
You guessed it. Shout it out mom friend!
Sugar.
And trust me on this, sugar is not your friend. In fact, sugar is just about the worse thing an IBD gal can have.
And I thought I was doing so good. I wasn’t addicted to candy. I was addicted to carbs.
Too bad for me it took 20 years to realize all those carb rich foods were just turning into sugar in my gut.
Ding, ding, ding.
Well, thankfully, I’ve got your back mama. There’s no way I’m letting you go 20 years, suffering with Crohn’s and colitis before you learn the truth.
It sure did take me long enough, but once I realized that all the foods I thought were helping were actually making things worse, it was time to make a change. And I’m talking about a huge overhaul. Learning to eat on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to finally quiet my IBD symptoms was like learning to eat like a baby again. So many new and weird foods came into my life like SCD legal yogurt and almond flour and dry curd cottage cheese.
If you’re looking to use food to quiet your gut struggles, you might be wondering if there’s a place for comfort food in this new healing life?
Well, I gotta be honest and tell you that it’s different. There’s no more mac and cheese and gravy in my comfort food. But I found out that comfort food can take on all shapes and sizes. And the best thing about comfort food is that it can actually be healthy.
What?
Yep, health and comfort food can go together.
And that’s what today’s blog video is all about.
