Karyn Haley [00:00:09]:

Hey there, mama. Welcome to season two of The Cheeky Podcast for Moms with IBD. I’m Karyn Haley, functional IBD nutrition and wellness coach and Crohn’s warrior. This podcast is all about us moms because our IBD plays by different rules. Season two is juicy, full of unconventional wisdom, real talk, new ways to tackle our illness, and a whole lot of community empowerment. And all of us advocating the hell out of our illness. We’re in this together and I’m here to help you find healing on your terms. Let’s do this.

Karyn Haley [00:00:49]:

Well, hey there, my friend. Welcome back to the Cheeky Podcast as we wrap up season two. I can’t believe it. What a season. I just wanted to pop into your earbuds one last time with a highlight reel of all the gut loving wisdom that season two brought us. There was some fantastic, cutting edge, only heard here interviews and solo episodes that came directly from requests and questions that you, dear listener, that ones that you had, you guided those solo episodes. It was a whirlwind of AHAs and how to’s. I am just so stinking proud of all we accomplished this season.

Karyn Haley [00:01:33]:

So what I want to do today is in case you missed an episode or maybe there’s one that you just need a reminder about. Because sometimes if you’re like me, you need to hear something a few times, maybe more than that, before you decide that you’re going to act on it. So let this addendum episode of season two, let that serve as a catalog, catalyst, or even the push in the pants that you need to dive in to get honest with yourself, to make big, bold, beautiful, but messy changes that transform your life. With IBD season two of the Cheeky Podcast, it is your number one starting place to make all of this happen. So let’s just dive in. Let’s get right into it. Okay? Back when we started with the first episode of the season, I knew that I had to open with the most innovative IBD provider that I personally know. My consultant, my mentor, my friend, Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:02:45]:

Ilana Gurvich. Her episode 102 that was titled Dr. Ilana Garvich on powerful IBD treatments you’ve never heard of. And that one, it goes down as probably my favorite cheeky episode of all time. If you haven’t listened to it, this is a must. I’m telling you, it is a must. Listen, it’s a masterclass in everything your traditional doctor isn’t telling you about. Crohn’s and colitis, Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:03:15]:

Gurevich’s gift to the world of IBD. It’s really in her ability to think outside the box, the treatment box. In her practice, she is testing out novel approaches to gut healing that I’m not seeing anywhere else. And that’s what makes her an IBD rock star. In our conversation, Dr. Gurevich educates us, if I could say that word, educates us on what biofilms are about and about how the pathogenic variety, it might be causing unseen harm to your digestive system and also to your illness. And when this happens, oftentimes we are kept stuck in a negative IBD loop. We’re never able to fully recover because of these biofilms.

Karyn Haley [00:04:08]:

So you’re gonna love how she explains what biofilms are and how they have the ability to impact us. It’s really the way that she talks about it. It’s really simple. It’s to the point. It’s just really good information to have. She also tells us to stop searching for a one size fits all approach to healing. This is a conc. That, you know, I talk about this all the time.

Karyn Haley [00:04:34]:

This is near and dear to my heart. And she takes us through some really fascinating IBD novel type of therapies, like rectal ozone therapy. Well, I shouldn’t say the word novel. They’re not new. They’re just ones that your doctor isn’t talking about, like rectal ozone therapy. And this one is new, relatively new. A oral form of fecal microbiota transplant treatment. She talks about that.

Karyn Haley [00:05:04]:

I just. I cannot recommend this episode enough. If you haven’t, go check it out, just. Just do it. Just go check it out. You won’t regret it. It’s fantastic. Eye opening, fantastic.

Karyn Haley [00:05:15]:

Okay, and then next up in season two, we have my most downloaded episode. Most downloaded episode of season two. It’s episode 103. This is a solo episode and it is titled the yogurt what your doctor isn’t telling you. Now, in this episode, we get into the problem that so many IBD doctors have. I will say, at least in America, I’m not saying all, but in America, this is definitely a challenge that they have. And that problem is that they have very little nutrition knowledge. But what knowledge they do have, they run with to its most basic logical conclusion, even if that conclusion is completely inaccurate.

Karyn Haley [00:06:00]:

Now, what I just said, that statement, it’s a mouthful. And it’s also kind of accusatory to the medical field and I don’t like being that way. But when it comes to nutrition, it’s kind of deserved. So let me just make this really plain and clear, what I’m saying and what I’m not saying. So this episode is all about yogurt. So take yogurt for example. Gastroenterologists, they have enough nutrition knowledge to know that the probiotics in yogurt are mostly good for people with ibd, but the problem is that they aren’t trained in the fact that different types of probiotics react in different ways and yogurt is included in that. So three key takeaways from this episode are, number one, the typical commercial yogurt, the one that your doctor recommends, it’s not your probiotic.

Karyn Haley [00:06:56]:

Answer when your IBD is in flare up mode, if you have a doctor who has prescribed yogurt, or maybe you’re just even curious about which probiotics are best for your ibd, this is going to be the episode for you to download. Another takeaway. Another takeaway from this episode is that we talk about the importance of an individualized approach when it comes to fermented foods. You might thrive on kombucha and sauerkraut, while I might thrive on homemade fermented yogurt to make even a dent in my IBD symptoms. And we get into that in this episode, how everyone is really different in this way and how it’s important for you to figure out which ones are best for you. And then lastly, in this episode, I give some advice to medical schools. Not that they’re asking for my advice in any way, shape or form, but I go there anyway just in case someone’s listening who wants to make a change. I wish medical schools would train their doctors on nutrition because a three hour course in it, a three hour study, it’s just not enough.

Karyn Haley [00:08:10]:

When you are treating a digestive disorder, three hours is just not enough. So my advice to them is do more with nutrition, study it more, have more hours of nutrition or refer your patients out when that nutrition question comes up. And it should comes up, should come up because this is a gastrointestinal disorder anyway, that’s my soapbox. That’s my advice for the medical community. You can tell probably I’m super passionate about this. I’m super passionate about you finding your best individual probiotic source. So if you’ve ever wondered what’s the best probiotic source for me, then this is going to be a must listen episode for you. Okay? And then next up in season two, that was episode 104, Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:09:06]:

Shahana Alibi on giving mothers permission to focus on their mental health. That’s the Title of the episode and even this title, it makes me want to just shout an A Frickin men. Because as women we need this message now more than ever. We need this message. All women need to put a focused attention on their men mental health. Men need to do it too. But as women, I feel like we don’t take the time for it. Even though we know we need to do it, we don’t take the time for it.

Karyn Haley [00:09:38]:

So you better believe that moms dealing with ibd, right? There’s women and then there’s moms and then there’s moms dealing with ibd. And you better believe that that population, you and I, we need to develop this skill more than anybody else. So Dr. Shahana’s message, it’s really clear. She talks about the societal pressures of feeling like we need to know how to do everything from day one, from that, from day one of the birth of our kids. She is just over moms feeling like they need to manage everything perfectly. You know what I’m talking about. You do so much that we then neglect our own mental health and our own physical health in the process.

Karyn Haley [00:10:27]:

So she talks about that and I love that conversation. Dr. Shahana, she educates us on the often under talked about concepts of I love this postpartum anxiety and postpartum ocd. Because so many of us women, especially moms with ibd, we experience this after the birth of a child, we experience this, but we are so used to hearing about postpartum depression and that, that is a terrible thing. But because of that, because it’s so ingrained in the terminology and just talking about what, what could possibly happen after you’re pregnant, we don’t know how to label these anxiety based post pregnancy emotions that we might have. You know, we’re not sad so we feel like, well, everything must be okay, right? But maybe not because Dr. Shahana, she walks us through it all from a doctor perspective, which is awesome. But then she also talks about it from the perspective of someone who’s been there too because she, she tells her story about having postpartum ocd.

Karyn Haley [00:11:41]:

So in this episode she talks about that her message is a really powerful one. I know you’re gonna relate to it. And then lastly she emphasizes the link between gut health, brain health and ibd. She’s a really big believer in small steps and she asks us to get really comfortable with a slower pace when we’re dealing with big issues because as she says, only then we can begin to make significant progress in the mind body realm. If You’re a mom living with ibd. This is a go to episode for you. There is so much wisdom packed into just a one hour conversation. You’re going to love it.

Karyn Haley [00:12:25]:

Okay, let’s move on and talk about episode 105 in season two. Now this one was titled, is titled It’s Still There. This one is titled the new Crohn’s and colitis treatment approach isn’t a pill, a food or a supplement. And what it is, is a deep dive into the more natural world of ibd. Exploring your best treatment provider options when you are ready to add in another modality to your regime. And no matter how you go about this, I really cannot recommend bringing a natural doc into your team. Enough. It’s really vital.

Karyn Haley [00:13:07]:

And I know, I know firsthand just how difficult it can be to find practitioners within this more natural realm of medicine. But when you do, oh my goodness, when you do, IBD healing magic happens. And I want this for you. I want you to experience the joy of walking up without planning your morning around the bathroom. I want you to experience the freedom of eating without fear of what happens next. I want you to be able to travel all over the world with IBD as only just this little dot in the back of your mind. You deserve healing like this. And so episode 105, it’s your primer to get started on this path.

Karyn Haley [00:13:54]:

Now, the top three ideas of wisdom in this episode are. Number one, we talk about why it’s important to create your own multidisciplinary care team which includes some type of complementary, alternative or functional medicine provider. And then I also walk you through your provider options, helping you weigh the pros and the cons of each type. And then lastly, I talk to you about the power of self advocacy in all aspects of your medical journey and why prioritizing your unique path is your best starting place. It’s the best starting place for everyone with a chronic illness. So if you are stuck in the gastrointestinal 15 minute standard treatment option treadmill, I gotta tell you my friend, it is time to hop off. So let episode 105 be the Flame that not only ignites your dream of long term remission, but also sets you up for how to go about getting started and really practical, step by step ways. Okay, let’s talk about the powerhouse episode that is episode 106 because holy cow, this one is a game changer.

Karyn Haley [00:15:16]:

This episode, it features Dr. Kasia Kynes as she enlightens us on the little known link between IBD and EBV that’s the Epstein Barr virus. Dr. Kynes. She starts out our conversation by helping us get really clear on the possibility that there may be more beneath the surface of what’s caused our IBD in the first place, because there may be a link with a past EBV infection. That’s the mono. Mononucleosis infection. She talks about how 95% of the world’s population is impacted by this.

Karyn Haley [00:15:57]:

95%. 95%. So that’s probably you, dear one, even if you. Even if you’re not symptomatic, you probably have been exposed to the EBV virus, even if you don’t know it. But there is research to indicate. She found the research to indicate that IBD may get its roots in the reactivation of dormant ebv. Interesting, right? So she talks about how getting tested is your crucial first step. She also educates us on something that I had really never thought of before, but it’s so important for those of us on immunosuppressive medication.

Karyn Haley [00:16:33]:

She talks about how the role of immunosuppressive drugs. I’m talking about the biologics that are so often used with ibd. She talks about how they can possibly help to reactivate EBV in your system. This is a really fascinating connection. You have to hear her talk about it because she does it much more eloquently, but it really is truly eye opening. And then lastly, Dr. Kynes, she leaves us with the message that we must fully embrace a multifaceted approach to healing. Oh, isn’t it interesting how this concept comes up over and over with all of our experts in season two? If you’re like me and you need an idea to hit you over the head a few thousand times, like I said earlier before, a concept takes hold, let this be your wake up call.

Karyn Haley [00:17:24]:

Dr. Kynes. She encourages us as moms with IBD to focus on empowerment, setting boundaries, and then addressing our emotional and spiritual health along the way. Particularly for those of us who are empaths, we need that even more when we are taking on other people’s feelings like empaths do. We need that so much more. And I find, tell me if you think this is true too, but I find that those with IBD tend to really be strong empaths. They tend to really identify with that target on them like they are empaths. So I think this is a really powerful episode, episode 106.

Karyn Haley [00:18:06]:

It is information gold. It’s something you’re only going to hear about here. There’s as far as I know nobody else talking about this fascinating connection. So go check it out. I highly encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already. I’m telling you, this is capital H huge. Are you like many of us with Crohn’s and colitis, turning to food to help heal your gut, but feeling overwhelmed by the myriad of gut healing diets out there? Gluten free, dairy free, Paleo SCD gaps. And that’s just naming a few.

Karyn Haley [00:18:42]:

It can be so confusing, frustrating and leave you feeling disheartened about which diet is the right fit for you. And trust me, I was there until I created the best tool to help me figure this out. Now maybe you’ve tried a diet or two only to give up quickly because you couldn’t figure out what to eat. Or maybe the plan was just too strict for you to follow. Here’s something you won’t hear from the so called food gurus. There isn’t one single diet that works for everyone. I don’t care which diet it is. And the best diet for you isn’t just about your symptoms.

Karyn Haley [00:19:21]:

It’s also about your lifestyle and your personality. Why start a diet based solely on your IBD symptoms only to abandon it a week later? Because it doesn’t fit your life. Let’s go ahead and turn to the guiding Principles of episode 107 to give you just a little brief overview of what that one was about. The information in this episode is titled Becoming an IBD Disruptor, which I love that title I have to say. Becoming an IBD Disruptor the game changer way you’ll beat ibd. Now it’s all about crafting your perfect Crohn’s and Colitis healing plan while remembering that your plan, my plan, your cousin’s plan, your online friends plan, your co worker with IBD’s plan. It’s all going to look completely different. And even though all of our plans, they will diverge, they will be different, they should all start in the same place.

Karyn Haley [00:21:10]:

And that same place is with a wheel of wellness. Okay? Now if you aren’t familiar with my concept of the wheel of wellness, definitely check out this episode because it tells you exactly what it is. But if there’s one thing that I know for sure, one thing that I know for sure about finding long term remission with ibd, it’s that you just cannot get there without a detailed wheel of wellness. Now here’s the takeaways. The top three takeaways from this episode. It seems like ibders, they fall into two camps. So this is takeaway number one. They fall into two camps.

Karyn Haley [00:21:47]:

So there’s the medication Die hards and then there’s the foodie Die Hards. Am I right? You know I’m right. Because anytime you go to a Facebook group or an Instagram post, it seems like they’re all in one or the other category. So we’ve got the medication Die hards and the foodie Die Hards. But here’s the problem. Unfortunately, neither of these approaches are diversified enough to maintain a long term path to healing when done completely on their own. Now, both might lull you into thinking they are your answer. Because here’s the thing with them, they can work, they can work for months, they can work for even years.

Karyn Haley [00:22:24]:

But using meds alone or using food alone, it will eventually lead you to failure. I have been at this long enough in my own life working with clients since 2010. So I’ve been doing this a long time. I’m telling you, this is the pattern. It will eventually lead to failure. A true lifelong gut healing path. It needs more. And that’s what my Gut Healing Flush formula is all about.

Karyn Haley [00:22:51]:

If you are a client, if you’re a community member, or maybe you’re a longtime podcast listener, you’ve heard me talk about this before. It’s my Flush formula framework and it’s all about the five pillars that make up your true lasting healing journey. Now, this is not a quick fix. It is more of a long term plan. And you can use your Flush pillars to craft out your own individual wheel of wellness. One that includes the specific remedies that you are currently using in areas like diet, mental health, mind, body medicine, unconventional treatments, lifestyle adjustments, and Targeted supplements. Episode 107. It walks you through everything you need to create the perfect wellness wheel with your name on It.

Karyn Haley [00:23:46]:

Okay. I want to also say we also talk about what real empowerment looks like in this episode. I see empowerment as a self guided belief in your amazing strengths and abilities and how true empowerment comes from a personalized approach to gut health. Empowerment, in my view, it does not come from following the masses. No, no, no. Empowered women carve their own healing path with conviction and persistence. Individual conviction and persistence. And then lastly, this episode, it emphasizes that even when we have the insight and intuition to craft this diverse plan, we can get our goals accomplished much faster.

Karyn Haley [00:24:36]:

When we have someone or someone’s right, multiple people by our side, getting support from your family or others that you have connection with, it is really crucial to your success. Episode 107 walks you through getting vulnerable and letting your loved ones in to this process with no guilt or shame. We get into all of that and so much more. I love this episode. It’s action packed. So check it out if you haven’t already. Okay, now let’s move on to episode 108. This was an interview episode with the brilliant Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:25:13]:

Michelle Jorgensen. Now, don’t let all the credentials, you’ll see it if you look at the show notes. Don’t let all the credentials behind her name scare you. Because yes, she’s a naturopath, yes, she’s a nutritional counselor. But where she really shines is in her pioneering wisdom surrounding dentistry. Yeah, she’s a dentist too. So she talks about the link between dentistry and digestive health. So here are a few takeaways from Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:25:42]:

Michelle’s episode. So as a biological dentist, she emphasizes the strong need for those of us with gut disorders to find a dentist who is also trained in gut health like a biological dentist. So you, if you’re searching that those are the terms you look for biological or holistic dentist. And she talks about how detrimental it can really be for our oral as well as our digestive health to work with a dentist who doesn’t understand this connection. She discusses the safe mercury removal technique. If you’ve got mercury fillings in your mouth, those are the silver fillings, it is time to get them out because they are wreaking havoc on your gut, in fact your whole health. And so she talks about how you can safely remove those with minimal toxic for both you and your dentist. And then lastly, Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:26:37]:

Michelle talks about how she uses ozone therapy in her dental practice. Now if you have been paying close attention here, you might remember that I mentioned ozone therapy. It came up in episode 102 with Dr. Gurvich. So this is it. Coming up again, that’s how important it is. This ozone therapy, it’s a little bit different than the one that Dr. Gurevich talks about.

Karyn Haley [00:27:00]:

This is oral ozone therapy, and she educates us on how it should be used to help with the healing process of oral tissue, especially for those with a compromised digestive system. This is a must listen for all of us. Anyone with Crohn’s and colitis, we really have to prioritize our oral health. And I am telling you that as much as I’m telling it to myself and Dr. Michelle’s wisdom, it just sets us up for dental health success. Okay, in episode 109, we switch gears a little bit. We delve into the world of probiotics. There is so much misinformation, confusion out there about gut dysbiosis and about which supplements work to treat it and which ones really, frankly, just don’t even do anything about it.

Karyn Haley [00:27:53]:

So many wonder, is my probiotic working at all? So I knew that it was time to end the confusion and just set the record straight on probiotics. So here’s the three biggest takeaways from episode 109. For Ibders and ibders, only probiotics are worth the effort. Okay, Now, I am not talking about your hubby with the gut of steel or your mom or your grandparent who only ate organic all their life because when they grew up, everything was just naturally organic. No, I’m talking about you. I’m talking about you, dear one, you with ibd. And the research backs me up. Here you can hear all about the studies that support probiotics for their ability to address inflammation, bacterial imbalance and immune system dysregulation in this episode.

Karyn Haley [00:28:51]:

And then we also talk about the best approach to buying probiotics. You know, if you’ve now, from the beginning of the episode, maybe you’re starting to buy into the use of probiotics in your life. Now we move into talking about how do you buy them and how it’s important to stop purchasing them from crap drug stores and purchasing crappy supplements there. Or buying your probiotics based on its huge CFU count, that’s the colony forming unit, because maybe you think that more is better. It used to be that way. But in the last 10 years, microbiome research has exploded into symptom specific strain matching. So in this episode, I go into what that is, what it means for you, how you can buy your probiotics based on your symptoms, not the bacterial count, not the CFU count. And then lastly, the last key takeaway from this episode, it’s all about the long term use of probiotics.

Karyn Haley [00:29:52]:

You know, is that something that you should be doing? And we talk about how moving into a food based approach as you move into more long term remission is much more sustainable and a much more healthy path for you because food is a great place to get your probiotics long term. So I walk you through your best options and I do want to say, even if you’re not there yet, even if you’re still in a flare up, even if IBD is still a big factor in your life, I still think this part of the episode will be important for you because it will just give you kind of a sense of what’s coming in your future. And that’s always exciting to think about the future and especially when you’re thinking about it in a positive way. Okay, moving on, we get to another interview episode. This one is titled Dr. Andrea on the intersection between Mental Health, Physical Health and self Compassion. Oh, I love this conversation with Dr. Andrea because she talks about what so often we ignore in our lives as moms with ibd, our mental health.

Karyn Haley [00:31:03]:

We get so caught up in the physical side that’s impacting our lives on a daily basis that we forget. We forget that our mind and our body are intimately connected and interdependent on one another to either move us toward health or it has the power to move us away from health. There are three best nuggets of wisdom that Dr. Andrea shares. So number one, she gives us a little pep talk. The pep talk we all need. The pep talk about how self compassion and a deep understanding of it is so important. And she knows about this firsthand because she has felt this push and pull of finding self compassion herself.

Karyn Haley [00:31:50]:

She talks about the ideas of self judgment and societal expectations that we all face. And she talks about how even though she is a licensed clinician and has worked as a therapist, she currently works as a coach. And so she walks us through how we can decide which practitioner is best suited for us based on our individual circumstances in this given moment. Love that. And then lastly, she reminds us that chronic stress and emotional burdens, it has the power to manifest in us physically. And of course we know this, I know you know this, we all know this. We know it’s somewhere in the back of our minds. But Dr.

Karyn Haley [00:32:34]:

Andrea, she just has this way about talking about topics that ignites us to take action. I kind of think it’s her. She has this really crazy soothing voice. And I think that’s what helps it sink in. Because even though this episode, it might not be what you would think, like, oh yeah, I have to listen to that right away. Trust me, you’re going to get a lot out of this conversation. Dr. Andreas, she’s just really.

Karyn Haley [00:33:01]:

I would, I would call her an enlightened soul. That’s kind of how she just exudes enlightenment. And for me, I have to say that after this interview, after we taped the interview, I made some big mind body changes in my own life too. It was just that powerful for me. So I hope that she can shed some light for you as well. Now, next, in season two, we moved into a solo episode and it was episode 111 titled why don’t More Ibders Prioritize this Healing Technique? Why don’t More Ibders Prioritize this Healing Technique? And it was so juicy. Are you curious about it? Are you curious to know what so many of us aren’t prioritizing? Takeaway number one from the episode is what we’re not prioritizing. It’s that we’re not prioritizing mind body practices like specifically breath work.

Karyn Haley [00:33:57]:

And I think that we don’t. Here’s what the conclusion, because I do see some resistance with clients on this, and here’s the conclusion that I’ve come to. I think the reason that we don’t prioritize mind body practices like breath work is because it seems too simple to work. When you’ve got Crohn’s, you’ve got colitis, you’re conditioned to believe that everything has to be hard. Diets are hard to follow, medications offer a myriad of side effects, and sometimes they don’t even work. We just think that easy doesn’t work. We just think that easy isn’t going to work. But let me tell you, there is nothing easier than breathwork because it’s something you already do and you don’t even have to think about it.

Karyn Haley [00:34:42]:

But when it’s done right, when it’s done consciously, it can make all the difference in the world for the health of your gut and your entire body. And then in this episode, I also discussed the barriers that we all have to implementing simple techniques like breathwork. Barriers like time constraints and lack of know how and skepticism and cultural stigma surrounding it. It’s no wonder we never try this super simple method that can have a big impact in healing our whole body and in really moving us into long term remission. And then lastly, I share four practical steps that anyone can take to incorporate into their daily routine to help you form that breathwork habit. I’m not going to get into those four steps here, but if you love practical, tangible, easy to follow advice, then you are going to love what this episode can offer for you because it really is the type of approach that you can use as your IBD advantage. Right? It’s like a little in your back it in your back pocket toolkit that you can use to your IBD advantage. So what are you waiting for? Go check it out.

Karyn Haley [00:36:06]:

Go check out that episode. Okay, well, maybe just wait. Wait until you finish this one first. But definitely go check out that episode. This. This is one of those step by step tutorial episodes with really clear action steps. I love those. I don’t know about you, but I love a step by step to really help you feel better.

Karyn Haley [00:36:27]:

Okay, my friend, we have made it to the SCD episode. Every season of the podcast has got to have at least one SCD episode. I’m going to promise you that from here on out, it will always have at least one. This was a big one for you guys. It’s episode 112. It’s titled Sherry, Lip and Karyn on SCD 2.0. SCD 2.0. If you’ve been around the IBD block for even a short time, like I said, chances are you’ve heard about the scd, the specific carbohydrate diet.

Karyn Haley [00:37:02]:

And when I first started my career as a health coach specializing in ibd, the STD was pretty much all I talked about. It’s the diet that put me into long term remission way back in 2008, and some form of it I’ve been following ever since. Although I have to say, as time goes by, I move further and further away from it. But it’s been part of my life in some fashion for longer than my youngest son has been on this planet and he’s now 14. So that’s a long time. The SCD, it has a lot of upsides. It has a lot of benefits. But in this episode, Sherry and I get really honest.

Karyn Haley [00:37:45]:

The scd, it needs a makeover. It needs a makeover badly. So both of us long term IBD veterans, long term SCD gals, in this episode, we attempt to give it the revamp that it desperately deserves. And it’s hard to boil down this episode into three big takeaways because this one, holy cow, it is just like filled. It’s like bam, bam, bam. It’s like it’s filled with multiple ahas. But I’m gonna take a stab at just whittling it down to three. Okay, so Sheri and I, we discuss what we love about scd.

Karyn Haley [00:38:22]:

We wanted to come at this conversation from a balanced place and let’s face it, there’s a lot to love about scd. And here’s what we love about it. So the first thing we talk about is what we love when you’re starting out, when you’re in a really dark place with Crohn’s or colitis and you are desperate, you are desperately clinging to any bit of wisdom that you can find when you realize that your doctor doesn’t have all the answers. We both agree that the SCD can be a lifeline. It can be an amazing lifeline. It can be, you know, what you’ve been searching for that elusive things that you haven’t been able to find to move the needle for you. So we love that it gives you the structure and guidelines that you need to begin to transform your life. But and this is takeaway number two, we feel like since since the diet was created almost 100 years ago and so much research has upended the way we see gastrointestinal health and the microbiome, we feel like a modernization is in order.

Karyn Haley [00:39:31]:

And then lastly, Sherry and I, we get into the weeds about what we would change. We get really specific on what needs to change. And if you want to give the Essence CD a shot for your long term flare free living needs, this episode is a must. Listen, listen to it, share it, repost it. It is that important of a conversation to SCD veterans spilling the tea on the good, the bad and the ugly of this potentially life transforming diet. It’s really gold. Thanks so much for tuning into the Cheeky Podcast for Moms with IBD today. The great information we’re dishing out on this pod is exactly the same type of conversations I get to have with my clients every day.

Karyn Haley [00:40:25]:

Karyn Haley [00:41:17]:

Okay, now here is an episode that got lots of attention when it aired. If you’re dealing with ibd, possibly other chronic illnesses, if you are struggling with feelings of loneliness and isolation and, and let’s face it, who isn’t, who isn’t dealing with those? Episode 113. It is a must listen for you. So some of you might know this because I’ve mentioned it before on the podcast that I have another podcast. I have another podcast I host with my dear friend Pam. We are both over 50 and we explore how loneliness shapes this stage of our lives. That’s what this podcast is all about. It’s called the Loneliness Project and you can check it out wherever you get your podcast.

Karyn Haley [00:42:01]:

Episode 113. It’s an episode we recorded earlier this year and it’s really the perfect fit for our community. It’s titled Chronic Illness Overcoming Loneliness and Isolation. And if you haven’t listened to it yet, you are going to want to check this one out. Pam and I, we talk about some new ideas for forming community when you feel isolated, you know, connecting with others, it’s really hard when your chronic illness is standing in your way. So we have some bright new, exciting ideas to help you connect with others who have similar stories as you. And then also Pam and I, we talk about what nutrition and lifestyle mean to us and how prioritizing these aspects of our lives has served us as kind of like an anchor and a guidepost when we didn’t really know what else to do. And you’ll see that Pam and I, we approach these important pillars, the food pillar and the lifestyle pillar.

Karyn Haley [00:43:00]:

We approach them differently from one another, but our bottom line is the same. You know, the importance of it in our life is the same. I love this part of the episode. You’ll have to tune in to see where we are different and where we come together on this. But it’s, it’s, it’s a cool part of the episode. And then lastly, Pam and I, we talk about nude emerging treatments in the world of chronic illness like precision medicine and regenerative therapies. Because when we feel better, we feel up to creating connections with others. And so this is a really powerful conversation.

Karyn Haley [00:43:36]:

Pam and I, I dare say we have this really easy going banter we’ve been friends for years and we genuinely care so much about each other and about our listeners experience. You are going to love just a little glimpse into my other podcast and I love that it’s on a topic that is so needed in the IBD world today. Okay. With just a few more episodes to go in season two, I knew, I knew I couldn’t let the season pass without taking up the call on a question that I get asked about so frequently. It’s what’s up with FODMAP diet? And why is it so stinking hard to follow what is up with it? So that’s episode 114. It tackles everything FODMAP related. So you can finally decide, is this the eating plan that is worth a second look for me? So here’s the top three takeaways from that episode. Firstly, I start right at the beginning.

Karyn Haley [00:44:37]:

We have to go over what the FODMAP basics are. We break it all down from what does this acronym actually really mean? It’s got a lot of big words, it’s a long acronym, and what does it actually mean? And then we talk about which foods are high in fodmaps and what’s the point of avoiding them? Like, you know, why? What does it actually do for you? And then number two, we discuss what this diet is and what it isn’t. And this is a really important distinction. It’s an important piece of information. A low FODMAP diet. It is a great way to get control of symptoms that are raging out of control. But. And here’s the but.

Karyn Haley [00:45:17]:

But it is not your end all, be all answer. Like so many people believe it is a symptom reliever. A symptom reliever, not a cure. It’s a symptom reliever that you can use while you’re in the process of getting to the root of your intestinal symptoms. Okay, so like I said, it’s not a cure all, but it certainly also is not a diet that you want to be on for life. So I get into the weeds and all of that, how you should use it, how it really is not the best way to be used, all of that. So you have a clear picture of how you might use it in your life. And then lastly, I talk about debunking all the FODMAP myths that are out there.

Karyn Haley [00:46:03]:

There are so many inaccuracies, inaccurate myths that are just perpetuating around, you know, around the Internet, around social media about this diet. And I just thought it was really fun to be able to Shed some light on this complete and utter misinformation when it comes to fodmaps. So all in the service of helping you then make the best decision for when it comes time to think about FODMAP foods in your life. This is a one of those step by step, actionable, tactic oriented episodes. If you like a roadmap for your GI health. This one is a great listen. Okay, that’s episode 114. Now let’s talk about episode 115 because it’s on a topic that I am not seeing get enough attention paid to and it’s one that can have a significant impact on so many with Crohn’s and colitis.

Karyn Haley [00:46:57]:

It’s Somatic Bodywork and we got really lucky to hear about this topic from a seasoned somatic bodywork coach named Jill Howell. Now in this episode, Jill walks us through why somatic training is so important for those of us with chronic illnesses like Crohn’s and colitis. She explains the power of how somatic coaching has the ability to help us release physical sensations and past traumas that are held in our body. She emphasizes the significant role that self compassion and acceptance can play not just for our mental well being, but for our physical healing as well. And then and knowing that this idea of releasing past trauma from our body and developing tools to help us find the peace within us, knowing that that’s important but freaking hard. She delves into some really simple at home techniques we can all use to help us just get this process started in our own lives. I just really love her take on this and I love how she talks about how we can connect with our younger self in a much more compassionate way. And you’re just going to have to check out this episode if you’re struggling to frame the past, you know, things that have happened to you in the past, or even current emotions that you’re dealing with that you’re just struggling to deal with.

Karyn Haley [00:48:30]:

Especially if you suspect that those challenges are impacting your physical health. Somatic Bodywork. It’s a new concept for me this year. This is something I’ve only recently learned about. It’s been around for a while, but it’s new to me. I started incorporating all of this a few months ago and I have to say I just cannot say enough. I cannot say enough about this powerful technique. It takes being really brave and being vulnerable in going to those past issues, but it’s really, really powerful.

Karyn Haley [00:49:05]:

So I hope that you will listen and then let me know what you think because I really want to hear what you think about this whole concept of somatic bodywork. Okay, my friend, we made it to the last episode in season two and I have to say this is a solo episode and it is my favorite solo episode of the entire season. It’s episode 116 and it’s titled no More Food Fear. No More Food Fear. It’s about exactly that. That’s what it’s about. This, this is one of the biggest issues my clients tell me all the time that they’re dealing with. And I don’t blame them.

Karyn Haley [00:49:42]:

Because of course you are afraid to eat. It makes complete sense. Every time you eat, you feel awful, right? It’s like there’s no guessing what that connection is. It’s like a linear line, B, right? There’s just a connection there. So you might not even know which foods your body likes and which foods you should be avoiding because you feel like everything makes you feel bad. Everything makes you feel like you have to run to the bathroom. It’s this vicious cycle and I haven’t met an IBD gal who doesn’t get this food fear concept. We all get it, right? We all experience it in some way.

Karyn Haley [00:50:20]:

But what if, what if there was something you could do about it? What if there was a path to help you overcome these fears? You’d leap at that opportunity, wouldn’t you? That’s what episode 115 is all about. Now here’s my favorite takeaways from the episode. Number one, we get real about the root causes behind our food fear. What is the real driver? It’s different for everyone. And I give you the tools that you need to figure out what’s behind your food fear. And then next, next, I lead you by the hand as we step by step. You know, I love a step by step as I give you this step by step practical approach to overcoming food based anxieties. These approaches, the ones that we go over in the episode, they can help you to foster a mindfulness about what you’re eating.

Karyn Haley [00:51:13]:

To help you connect the dots. To help you connect the dots and then reconnect with what your body is telling you when you eat. This is really powerful stuff and it has the potential to lead you down the path of just a much more peaceful relationship with food. I mean, who would not want that? Can I get an amen for a peaceful relationship with food? And then lastly, we talk about what you can reasonably expect to achieve on your own and knowing when it’s time to seek out support, you know, maybe even professional support. When you’re dealing with these food fears. I can’t tell you how much I love, love, love this topic. I love this episode. I know you’re going to love it too.

Karyn Haley [00:52:01]:

Okay, so that’s it. That is the recap. That’s the Spark Notes or the Cliff Notes version, depending on what age you are. You’re going to know what I’m talking about. That’s it. That’s the Cheeky Podcast for Moms with IBD Season two recap. And I’ve never been prouder of the podcast than I am after this season. I am so stinking proud of what we accomplished with the podcast because we had so many dynamic, game changing guest interviews and profound topics for our solo episodes.

Karyn Haley [00:52:37]:
